I remember being in Israel when Joe and his family were visiting. I was able to spend a day on tour with them. We walked the stations of the cross and Joe phoned his mother from there. He knew how much it would mean to her. He was a very caring family man and will be missed.

Our sincere sympathies to Joe's family. We haven't seen Joe in more than 20 years, but he holds a "bigger than life" spot in our minds and hearts as impressionable EM residents. I remember being in the tiny resident lounge at Einstein one day, when Joe (my Chief Resident) handed out our monthly schedules and I had 29 twelve hour shifts scheduled. I said to Joe, "really? 29 shifts?!", and Joe said, "you're lucky it wasn't a 31 day month...that's what we needed". Crack me up! Joe was one of the most dedicated and hard working EM docs I have ever met. And, he would never ask you to do anything HE wouldn't do ten-times-over, HIMSELF. He was an inspiring leader, even way back then. The mission was always front and center. He will be sorely missed by our profession.
Sincerely,
Brian and Tina Nester

My deepest condolences on the death of Doctor Joe
Kuchinski, a wonderful human being, who cared foremost about his family, and friends, and always about the students of PCOM. I had the pleasure of serving on the Board with Joe, he was a wonderful contributor to the Board, and always cared first about the education and welfare of the students. He always strived to make sure that PCOM trained the Best and the Brightest! He succeeded!

I worked with Dr. Kuchinski at Lincoln Hospital where he was the ED Director. I was the office assistant. He was always kind, considerate, lighthearted and generous. Some people you just never forget. Dr. Kuchinski was one of those people. I pray that his family and close friends find strength during this difficult time. The South Bronx is better for having had him here.

I worked as an ER nurse under Dr. Kuchinski at Trinitas. He was protective of his nurses. He was passionate about his work. The funniest time was when I glued my fingers together with Derma bond and he didn't believe me, because I have RA. He was so embarrassed when he realized I wasn't playing (this time). He talked often of his wife and son and his brother, whom he lost to cancer. He was an advocate for stopping smoking and would encourage patients to stop. I am so sorry for your loss. Peace be with you.
