Obituary of Kathleen Van Den Houten England
Kathleen Van Den Houten (Kay) England, 91, homemaker, passed away peacefully at Nathan Adelson Hospice in LV on November 2, 2018. Kay was born in New York City on August 31, 1927. She was raised in Albany, NY by her parents, Genevieve (Jane Lucas) and James L. Van Den Houten, who started the family tradition of summering at Lake George, NY with a little (red) lakeside cottage. Kay attended Catholic schools in Albany and graduated from the College of St. Rose, Albany, N.Y. in June 1949, with a B.A. in English, inspiring her lifelong love of literature, reading and bridge. Kay also treasured and played the piano.
Kay met Frank Wesson England at the Albany Ski Club. They were married on January 20, 1951 in East Greenbush and enjoyed a skiing honeymoon in Mont Tremblant, Canada. Kay and Frank raised their four daughters in East Greenbush, NY, Madison, NJ, and Cohasset, Mass. After he retired from Aetna, Kay and Frank spent their retirement years split between LV (winter) and Lake George (summer.)
Kay was preceded in death in 2012 by her loving husband of 61 years, Frank, who called her "the light of his life." She was preceded in death as well by her parents (Jane & Jim), her younger sister (Peggy) & younger brother (James, III).
Kay is survived by 5 daughters: Jeanne Wilson of East Greenbush, NY, Deborah E. Zepnick (Glen) of Scottsdale, AZ, Kathleen Jane England of LV, Terese E. Duggan (Chris) of LV, & Janet M. England of Nashua, NH. Kay is survived by 5 granddaughters: Andrea Laird (Justin), Valerie Davis (James), Alexandra MacCallum (Ryan), Kara Duggan, Maura Duggan & two grandsons, Donald Couse (Cindy) & Timothy Couse. Kay is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Trevor, Reid & Bradley Laird, Easton MacCallum, Isabelle Davis, Justin, James, Nicholas, Craig & Benjamin Couse. Kay is also survived by her loving cousin (Carol V. Alsen), 2 god-daughters (Dr. Liz O'Rourke & Priscilla Alban) and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins from the England and Van Den Houten families.
Visitation: 4 pm to 6 pm on Sun, Dec 9, 2018 at Kraft-Sussman Funeral Services, 3975 S. Durango, #104, LV, NV 89147. Funeral mass: Mon, Dec 10, 2018, 11 am, at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Dr, LV, NV. Kay will be laid to rest next to Frank in Arlington National Cemetery in 2019.
The family would like to thank all who care for her and especially family friend Pam (Brown) Orologio, for her assistance caring for Kay this past year and the entire Brown family for their friendship and love since our mothers (Kay and Pat) attended Vincentian Institute High School (Albany, NY.)
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice, No. Queensbury Vol. Fire Dept (Cleverdale, N.Y) or a charity of your choice. Thank you.
