Obituary of Irving Joseph Steinberg

Irving Steinberg, 80, a resident of Las Vegas since 1965, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2019. Irv is the youngest son of the late Morris Aaron Steinberg and the late Leah Baum. Morris and Leah fled from Poland in 1938, immigrating to America where Irv was born just 6 months after their arrival. Irv had two older brothers: Leon Steinberg (who passed away just over a year ago in Las Vegas) and Arnie Steinberg, of Skokie, Illinois. Irv grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, ultimately moving to Los Angeles when he was 13. Irv attended Hollywood High School, where he was the lead scorer (as a scorekeeper) for the varsity basketball team. During high school, Irv met the love of his life, Elaine Miller of Los Feliz, California, whom he met at a BBYO dance and married in Los Angeles on June 18, 1961. Irv attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where he participated in the ROTC, and graduated with a B.S. in June 1961. He then served as an officer in the United States Army, in Ft. Knox, Tennessee, and Ft. Riley, Kansas. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant and Tank Commander of the U.S Army in 1962, when he changed paths and began a fulfilling over 40 year career as a Certified Public Accountant. Irv and Elaine moved to Las Vegas in 1965, where Irv joined the Engel & Engel accounting firm, where he later became a partner. As Las Vegas grew, his firm evolved into an International Accounting Firm, and was the CFO of Preferred Equities Corporation, before becoming a consultant. Irv is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elaine Steinberg, his three children Michael Steinberg (Sheeri), Debbie Lapping, and Jeff Steinberg (Jennifer). Irv was blessed with six grandchildren (Aaron Lapping, age 27, Maddie Lapping, age 25, Hailey Blair, age 16, Julia Steinberg, age 16, Ben Steinberg, age 11, and Joshua Steinberg, age year-and-a-half). Irv was selfless and civic minded, participating in the construction of the Clark County Library on East Flamingo, which was completed in 1971. He was the treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors at Temple Beth Sholom and the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy for many years. He was also Campaign Chairman for the General Campaign for the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas. His hobbies included golf, with a hole-in-one at the Las Vegas Country Club, sailing and playing games with his children and grandchildren. He was known for his warmth, kindness and humor, always saving special jokes for his family and friends. Funeral services will be at Noon on Monday, March 25, 2019 at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89135. Shiva will begin at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the home of Debbie Lapping. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Beth Sholom. The Steinberg Family would like to thank the endless hours of caregiving provided by his loving and trusted caregivers that made Irv’s life comfortable over the past few months.»(Do not delete this line.
